Fire Contained at Oxford, Alabama National Gypsum Plant; No Injuries Reported

OXFORD, Ala. (From news reports) -- A fire broke out Monday afternoon, July 28, at the National Gypsum plant in Oxford, prompting a large response from local and regional emergency crews. The Oxford Fire Department (OFD) responded to the call and successfully contained the fire to a single room. No injuries were reported.

The incident was first reported around midday, with OFD arriving promptly on scene. As of 1:20 p.m., officials confirmed the fire had been fully extinguished and the scene was cleared.

Oxford Fire Department officials expressed gratitude to several agencies that provided crucial support during the emergency response. The Eastaboga Volunteer Fire Department and the Anniston Army Depot Fire Department assisted with additional personnel and firefighting equipment. Their help was especially important due to the extreme heat conditions at the time of the incident.

Paramedics with Oxford Health Systems were also on scene, ensuring firefighter safety by monitoring for heat-related health concerns. Additionally, the Anniston Fire Department provided coverage within the city of Oxford, allowing OFD personnel to focus fully on the fire at the plant.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area during the response to allow safe and efficient access for emergency vehicles. The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and an investigation may be ongoing.

National Gypsum, located in Oxford's industrial area, produces drywall and related building materials. There has been no report on whether the fire will affect production operations at the plant.

Officials praised the coordinated efforts of all departments involved, noting that their swift response prevented further damage and ensured the safety of all personnel on site.
