Crews battle fire for hours at WestRock facility

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (From news reports) -- Crews battled a fire for nearly four hours Monday at a WestRock facility in Florence County, according to Windy Hill Fire Chief John DeLung.

DeLung said the fire may have started where the facility dumps its wood chips. He added it smoldered for hours and was very hard to get to. DeLung said the fire burned a part of the conveyor belt system.

The cause has not been determined. In 2017, WestRock announced a planned investment at its Florence mill to increase efficiency, quality and service levels, according to a news release. It said the "$410 million investment over two years will include installing a 330" state-of-the-art Kraft Linerboard machine and related infrastructure that will replace three older, narrow-width paper machines."
