Fire breaks out at one of the remaining Marcal Paper buildings

NEW JERSEY (From news reports) -- One of the remaining Marcal Paper buildings in Elmwood Park caught fire late Tuesday morning.

At about 11 a.m. Tuesday, there was a fire at a Marcal Paper building near Summit Avenue and River Drive, said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Sullick. The building, marked Soundview Paper Co., which owned Marcal Paper Mills, is adjacent to last month's nine-alarm blaze that destroyed the complex.

The fire started in an "electrical-type room," with dryers and an office, Police Chief Michael Foligno said. At "face value," the fire appeared to be electrical, he said. Shortly after noon, the fire was out, he said.

Two people were inside the building at the time of the fire, but neither person was hurt, Foligno said.

While there does not appear to be any connection with last month's nine-alarm fire, Foligno said it was a bit jarring to return to the edge of the fire site.

"Am I surprised? Yeah, I'm a little surprised," he said. "It's almost like re-living a nightmare, because that was tough."

On Jan. 30 at about 5 p.m., a raging blaze tore through the 45,000-square-foot warehouse building, which acted as a distribution center for Marcal paper products. The flames consumed the building, and firefighters battled the intense heat of the flames amid the searing cold of the night.

The fire incinerated the Marcal Paper Mills, leaving mounds of blackened brick, splintered wood and gnarled metal. The fire left 500 people without jobs.

Nearly a month later, details are few and far between. A cause and point of origin for the fire has yet to be determined, but federal investigators, who were assisting local law enforcement in the investigation, left the site by Feb. 11.
