Student Spotlight: Eilee Keske of Minnesota, graduating in Spring 2025

Eilee Keske

At the University of Minnesota, the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) discovers and teaches solutions for the sustainable use of renewable resources and the enhancement of the environment.

Its graduates work in conventional and emerging bio-based industries, food and bioprocessing industries, and firms and agencies focused on environmental protection and improvement, such as:

  • Biobased composites
  • Biofuels
  • Biotechnology
  • Building materials
  • Environmental impact assessment mitigation
  • Food processing
  • Paper
  • Nanotechnology
  • Renewable energy
  • Renewable materials
  • Water quality
Eilee Keske is a student in the program, and she shares some of her experiences at Minnesota.

Eilee Keske - Graduating in Spring 2025

What attracted you to the Bioproducts & Biosystems Engineering program?

I was drawn to the BBE program because I was interested in chemistry and chemical engineering but wanted to focus on a major centered around sustainability and bio-based product innovation. During my freshman year, I took a course called Biorenewable Resources, where I learned about bio-based processes and materials. I really enjoyed the course, and along with other major exploration activities, it solidified my decision to pursue BBE.

Were you looking into pulp and paper when you were in high school?

No, I wasn't set on engineering in high school, but I knew I was interested in math and science. I didn't know anything about the pulp and paper industry until I started my BBE degree, where professors and classes introduced me to it.

Tell us about the internships and/or co-ops you have had.

During my sophomore year, I worked with Professor Tschirner in the biomass conversion lab, conducting kraft cooking yield studies. This experience introduced me to the pulp and paper industry. It also led to a 15-month co-op at Sappi in Cloquet, MN, where I worked as a chemical engineering co-op in the environmental department. In this role, I focused on environmental compliance and Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement projects. I enjoyed the hands-on experience, as it was my first exposure to a manufacturing environment.

What does this program mean to you?

This program means a lot to me because of the close-knit community. I have built strong relationships with both my peers and professors, and their support has helped me gain confidence in my ability to succeed in engineering. Without that support, I might have felt lost in such a challenging degree.

Where do you see yourself in five and 10 years, and what are your career aspirations?

In the next few years, I see myself working as a process engineer. Over time, I hope to advance into a senior role, eventually becoming a manager or supervisor of a production area.

What would you recommend to anyone who might be interested in getting into pulp and paper?

I would say that the pulp and paper industry offers a wide range of opportunities for those exploring their career interests. The industry covers everything from power generation to pulping, papermaking, and wastewater treatment, making it easy to find a niche that suits you. Additionally, since the industry is well-established, many companies have structured career development programs that can support long-term growth.

Please let us know of anything else of interest about your experiences in the program.

The BBE program provides in-depth knowledge on pulp and paper chemistry, as well as practical applications relevant to the industry. It's a great option for anyone interested in this field or other allied industries.

Please tell us what year you are in the program, your hometown, and anything interesting you might do in your free time.

I am a senior in BBE from Lakeville, MN. In my free time, I enjoy reading and spending time outdoors.
