GEORGETOWN, S.C. (From news report) -- International Paper will be closing its container plant, the remaining mill in Georgetown, later this year, according to a company spokesperson.

The plant has more than 100 employees, who the company says they will assist, as well as customers, through this transition.

A "strategic assessment" of the Georgetown facility was completed by the company, and it "made the difficult decision to cease operations later this year," a spokesperson said.

They added that "International Paper's Georgetown facility has been a valuable part of the company for many years."

News of the closure comes after the shutdown of another Georgetown International Paper facility back in late 2024. This was Georgetown's largest employer with nearly 700 employees.

International Paper told state and local leaders in June of 2025 that it has plans to sell, but will handle the sale internally, after receiving multiple bids from different groups who are interested in the property.

In March of 2025, State Senator Stephen Goldfinch said the facility is slated to become a bio-mass plant, but Georgetown County leaders said no redevelopment plans are in the works as of now. The company stressed that it has not made a final decision on a buyer and that it plans to conduct a "comprehensive evaluation" of each bid, according to a Facebook post from Georgetown County.
