Port Mellon, BC (News release) -- The provincial government has appointed two negotiators to work with Domtar to keep the Howe Sound pulp mill operating, MLA Randene Neill announced Friday, Sept. 4.

The move comes after Domtar announced on Aug. 20 that the mill would be indefinitely curtailed, raising concerns about the future of the facility and its workforce.

According to Neill, the negotiations are aimed at preserving more than 350 jobs connected to the mill's operations.

"Discussions are moving forward through the appointed negotiators to identify a path forward," Neill said in a statement.

"While there is work to do, this is an encouraging step and reflects a shared commitment to finding solutions that support workers, their families, and the community."

The Howe Sound pulp mill is a major regional employer, and the negotiations could have significant implications for workers and the broader community.
