Heavy smoke pours from Richmond, Virginia Sonoco facility after machine catches fire

RICHMOND, Va. (From news reports) -- Richmond firefighters battled heavy smoke and fire at a Richmond packaging company late Tuesday night.

Firefighters with the Richmond Fire Department were called to Sonoco Product Company, located at 1850 Commerce Road, just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1. Heavy smoke was visible from the upper levels of the building.

There was a massive fire department presence at the facility. A battalion chief at the scene said that these crews would likely be working to contain this incident for the rest of Tuesday night.

That chief added that no injuries have been reported as a result of this incident. This included a woman who was reported to have been in the building at the time. She was able to get herself out safely.

On Wednesday, April 2, a spokesperson for the city of Richmond provided additional information.

Per that spokesperson, a fire began in a machine located on the first floor of the building. While the bulk of the fire was put out by 11:19 p.m., units remained at the scene for an "extended time" due to both debris and "deep-seated" hot spots.
