Graphic Packaging closing second North Carolina facility this year

NORTH CAROLINA (From news reports) -- Atlanta-based Graphic Packaging will close its facility in Randleman, resulting in a loss of about 65 jobs there.

The company that mainly supplies paperboard and folding cartons for beverages and packaged food also closed one of its Charlotte operations in March, resulting in the loss of 112 jobs there.

Graphic Packaging expects to close its Randleman operations around July 9, according to paperwork filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce.

"After assessing the company's overall packaging network, it was decided to consolidate production at this facility into our broader network of packaging plants. We anticipate that the closure will be completed in Q4 2024, and we are committed to supporting our employees during this transition. They are encouraged to apply for other positions at GPI if they are interested and qualified, and outplacement assistance will be made available. We also look forward to working with local employers to assist with potential job placements," the company released in a statement.

The global company has more than 100 locations and 23,000 employees worldwide. It reported that its 2023 net income increased by 39% to $723 million from the year before. Of its 70 U.S. locations, it has three other locations in North Carolina: Winston-Salem, Pineville and Lumberton, according to its website.

The company operates in Randleman in a 102,500-square-foot building on 9.2 actress of land off U.S. 311. It owns the property that has a tax value of about $2.6 million.

The building was built in 1974, according to Randolph County tax records. Graphic Packaging owns the building, but has not finalized what its plans are for the real estate, according to a spokesperson.
