Firefighters endure 20-degree temps fighting Georgia Pacific facility fire

DUDLEY, N.C. (From news reports) - An overnight fire at a manufacturing and packing plant had fire crews battling a blaze in near-record temperatures.

Around 8:30 p.m., Dec. 3, The Arrington Volunteer Fire Department Inc. says it was called for a possible fire at Georgia Pacific, along with the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department, and Mount Olive Fire Department.

Firefighters say flames were found in one of the hoppers that collected sawdust.

According to the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department, a baghouse caught fire and was contained to just the equipment. While the plant was fully operational at the time, the fire happened outside while everyone was inside.

Crews were able to get access to the fire and put out the flames.

Firefighters say there were no injuries and the fire only caused minimal damage to the baghouse equipment.

The fire department says crews spent almost 6 hours in the 20-degree temps overnight.
