DS Smith unveils temperature-controlled pharmaceutical packaging

DS Smith, an international fibre-based packaging solutions company, has launched TailorTemp, a new temperature-controlled packaging solution, for the pharmaceutical industry.

The product was unveiled at the Pharmapack Europe 2025 exhibition held in Paris, France.

DS Smith noted that its TailorTemp product is a response to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries' demand for sustainable options to store and transport sensitive medicinal products.

It claims that its packaging solution ensures that the enclosed products remain within strictly regulated temperature parameters across various territories.

The company added that TailorTemp is crafted from recyclable corrugated cardboard material.

The product's dimensions, insulating properties, and coolant quantity are optimised through a parametric algorithm.

The algorithm has been developed via a collaboration between DS Smith and an independent laboratory specialising in thermal transfers.

The design team at DS Smith utilises the modelling tool to expedite prototyping and validate the packaging solutions under actual conditions. TailorTemp has proven its efficacy by maintaining cool temperatures for up to 36 hours.

Furthermore, DS Smith's predictive modelling within TailorTemp enables precise forecasting of temperature fluctuations during storage or transit.

This data is crucial in designing effective packaging solutions that are subsequently tested in laboratory conditions to ensure their reliability.

The introduction of TailorTemp aligns with DS Smith's Now and Next Sustainability Strategy.

DS Smith innovation product manager Marlena Hardy said: "TailorTemp demonstrates just how versatile and reliable fibre-based material can be, not only to maintain temperatures in cold chain logistics, but also to deliver a recyclable outcome for customers seeking to meet sustainability targets.

"Design is everything, and our team is using specialist predictive modelling in the creation solutions for our pharma customers that are fit for purpose and then validating them in the laboratory without delay."
