British Columbia invests $8.6 million through BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund into wood-product projects

Government of British Columbia is injecting up to $8.6 million through the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund (BCMJF) into eight capital projects. These projects aim to create and safeguard hundreds of jobs in the wood-product and fabricated-metal manufacturing sectors, fostering economic growth in local communities.

Among the recipients of the funding is San Industries Ltd., a vertically integrated forestry company. San Industries will receive up to $2.5 million to enhance its Port Alberni plant, optimizing processing lines and constructing a new storage facility. This investment will boost efficiency and environmental sustainability, creating 30 new jobs and enabling the company to enter international markets with value-added wood products.

Richmond Plywood Corp. Ltd., a company with over 60 years of operation, is set to receive as much as $2.3 million for innovative equipment. This will improve its value-added manufacturing processes using second-growth fibre and waste wood, leading to higher-quality products, reduced carbon footprint, and the creation of 14 new jobs.

The BCMJF, with a total investment of $180 million, supports industrial and manufacturing projects that generate well-paying jobs and economic benefits for communities across British Columbia. It plays a crucial role in advancing clean and inclusive growth throughout the province.

This funding initiative aligns with the province's efforts to promote value-added manufacturing in the forestry sector. Initiatives such as the new value-added manufacturing program introduced in January 2023 aim to secure a dedicated fibre supply for small and medium-sized manufacturers, ensuring the long-term sustainability of jobs and enhancing the resilience of local economies.

The BCMJF has already committed $44.6 million to 33 capital projects and 13 planning projects, resulting in the creation of over 640 jobs and the protection of more than 1,000 existing manufacturing positions throughout British Columbia. This strategic investment underscores the commitment to building a strong and sustainable economy through clean and inclusive growth, as outlined in the StrongerBC Economic Plan.
