Canada backs eight Saskatchewan tree projects with $24.5 million

Eight tree-planting and restoration projects across Saskatchewan have $24.5 million in funding through the 2 Billion Trees program to plant more than five million trees. The projects were approved for funding before the Budget 2025 announcement to wind down the program, Natural Resources Canada said.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band Forest Restoration Project will receive $7,868,264 to plant 3.5 million trees in Woodland Cree traditional lands in northern Saskatchewan. The project will support boreal forest regeneration after successive wildfires.

The Métis Nation - Saskatchewan Home and Future Forests Project will receive $6,960,450 for a community-led planting initiative across eco-regions in Saskatchewan. The project will plant 618,000 trees to sequester carbon and expand tree coverage to increase climate resilience.

The Saskatchewan Woodland Caribou Habitat Restoration project will receive $6,353,520 to restore legacy linear features and priority areas of caribou habitat affected by high-severity wildfires within Saskatchewan's Boreal Plain woodland caribou range. The work will include access planning, site preparation and the planting of 417,000 trees across 350 hectares to support habitat recovery and improve landscape connectivity.

Sask Parks will receive $743,480 for the first part of its provincial parks reforestation project. The project will plant 13,000 to 50,000 trees each year over eight years, for a total of 95,299 trees, under the Core Area Silviculture Program across Saskatchewan's provincial parks.

Sask Parks will also receive $961,620 for the second part of the provincial parks project. The project will plant and maintain 418,440 new trees over eight years, and Saskatchewan will conduct site preparation and reclamation activities where needed to increase viable habitat for species at risk and park wildlife.

Cowessess First Nation will receive $663,782 for the Cowessess Forest Growth Project in Cowessess, Saskatchewan. The project will build Indigenous capacity and plant 25,000 native tree species to expand forest cover within the First Nation, including on disturbed agricultural lands, for long-term ecosystem improvements and carbon sequestration.

The Métis Nation - Saskatchewan 2BT Program received $625,031 for capacity building linked to tree planting in Saskatoon. The project ended in March 2026 after a feasibility study on seed collection and a tree nursery, and it also contributed to the planting of over 5,000 trees on the Back to Batoche Festival Grounds.

The 2024 SaskPower Planting Project will receive $327,842 to plant 99,709 incremental trees across 30 hectares by 2027 in Regina. The project will fill in and improve habitat for migratory birds, deer and other wildlife, increase biodiversity, and reduce erosion, dust and wind near power stations.
