30-year-old man drowns in industrial incident at Domtar Crofton Mill

CANADA (From news reports) -- A 30-year-old Domtar Crofton Mill worker died after the heavy equipment he was operating fell into the ocean and he was trapped inside on Wednesday, June 4.

First responders were called to the scene at around noon. Police, the Crofton Fire Department, ambulance and divers from the Canadian Coast Guard attended the scene. A rescue was attempted but the man could not be revived.

"The BC Coroners Service and Worksafe BC are conducting concurrent investigations into what led to this tragic outcome," said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

Chris Stoicheff, senior director of public affairs for mill owner Domtar, said in a statement that the company is "deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a valued member of our team," and was in the process of investigating and co-ordinating with local emergency officials.

Stoicheff said employee and family assistance program personnel were on site and critical-incident counsellors were made available to offer emotional support.

"Our top priority is the safety and security of our employees and the well-being of our employee's family at this difficult time."

WorkSafeBC said it has launched an investigation into the incident and isn't providing any additional details.

"The primary purpose of a WorkSafeBC investigation is to identify the cause of the incident and any contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future," the agency said in a statement.
