Worker dies after getting trapped in machine at North Tonawanda, N.Y. WestRock manufacturing facility

NEW YORK (From news reports) -- A worker died after becoming trapped in a machine Thursday night, Jan. 18, at a North Tonawanda manufacturing facility, according to city police and firefighters.

The incident happened at WestRock, 51 Robinson St., North Tonawanda Police Chief Keith Glass said.

Firefighters responded to the facility, between River Road and Oliver Street, at 7:47 p.m., North Tonawanda Professional Firefighters Local 1333 posted on Facebook.

The 58-year-old man, whose name was withheld, sustained critical injuries and was transported to DeGraff Medical Park, Fire Chief Joseph Sikora said. He was later pronounced dead.

The Niagara County facility manufactures corrugated containers, according to the company's website. The company's home office is in Sandy Springs, Ga.

"The safety and well-being of our employees are our top priority, and we are taking steps to fully understand the facts and circumstances that led to this event," a company spokesman said in an email. "Our thoughts are with the family of our team member and the team at the plant."

The agency, which has up to six months to complete its review, did not have an estimated completion date for the inspection in North Tonawanda, the spokesman said.
