Unions vote to reject contract with Graphic Packaging Texas mill, have given strike notice

DOMINO, Texas (From news reports) -- Local United Steel Worker unions have voted down another contract with Graphic Packaging International and have given a 10-day notice to strike.

Votes from USW 1148 and 1149 were overwhelmingly in favor of not accepting the contract, said a union representative who asked not to be identified.

Union members also voted against accepting a contract in December 2022, which restarted negotiations with Graphic Packaging.

The previous contract expired in April 2022. In September 2022, the unions held informational pickets outside the mill.

The unions want to negotiate over pensions, health insurance and the two-tier pay system.

These are "quality of life issues," the representative said.

The two-tier system is a type of payroll system in which one group of workers receives lower wages than another. Union members also have not received an inflation raise while the company has increased prices about 30% on their products, according to union members.

There are more than 400 members of the local unions working with Graphic Packaging.

Graphic Packaging did not respond in time for this article.
