The U.S. Department of Commerce has launched its seventh administrative review of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber for the period from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. The review will assess whether the current duty structure remains appropriate, with final results expected by January 31, 2026, according to the Federal Register notice published on February 21, 2025​.

The review covers numerous Canadian lumber producers and exporters, including major firms such as Canfor Corporation, Resolute Forest Products, West Fraser Mills, and Tolko Industries. These companies, along with several smaller producers, will undergo evaluations of their sales and pricing practices under U.S. trade regulations​.

The U.S. has imposed duties on Canadian softwood lumber since 2017, citing government subsidies that allegedly give Canadian producers an unfair advantage. Canada has consistently challenged these measures, arguing they are unwarranted and detrimental to the lumber industries of both countries.

As part of the review, the Department of Commerce will determine whether exporters or producers have absorbed anti-dumping and countervailing duties through affiliated U.S. importers. The findings could influence future duty rates and trade policies between the two nations​.
