Smurfit Kappa will invest $68 million, create 200 new jobs at packaging plant in Anderson County, South Carolina

SOUTH CAROLINA (From news reports) -- Smurfit Kappa, a paper-based packaging company, has announced it will make a $68 million investment and create 200 new jobs in Anderson County.

The company expects to acquire a 259,000-square-foot facility in Anderson at 1105 Scotts Bridge Road. The facility will be the company's first operation in South Carolina.

"As a global company, Smurfit Kappa has numerous options when establishing a new facility. We recognize the significance of this project and are confident that our pro-business economic climate will reinforce that South Carolina is the right choice," said State Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to this project on Friday, Nov. 17.

Smurfit is Europe's leading corrugated packaging company and has more than 350 production sites in 36 countries.

The company designs, manufactures and supplies paper-based packing products to surround, promote and protect interior contents, according to its website.

"We are pleased to welcome Smurfit Kappa to Anderson County, South Carolina," said Brett Sanders, vice-chairman of Anderson County Council. "This project will contribute greatly to the economy of Anderson County and provide new opportunities for our citizens. We are excited to see the impact that this new company will bring to our area."
