Smurfit Kappa's leadership in sustainability and innovation recognised with 8 WorldStar Awards

DUBLIN (News release) -- Smurfit Kappa has continued to demonstrate its leadership in sustainable and innovative packaging solutions by winning eight 2020 WorldStar Awards.

The first award was for Rollor Packaging, a pioneering and fully sustainable product which protects clothing from being creased during delivery, which Smurfit Kappa developed with its partner Rollor. Made from a single corrugated sheet, it has generated significant interest in the fashion industry and is UPS approved.

Another winning product for online shopping was the innovative 'eCommerce Pedal Pack' for replacement bike pedals which is slim enough to fit through a letterbox and offers increased space for branding.

Smurfit Kappa also excelled in the Beverage Category with a deceptively simple Litovel beer multipack which facilitates considerable logistics savings, and a clever pack for Chivas Scotch whisky which reduces its carbon footprint and can be repackaged while retaining the outer case.

The 'Smart Edge-Protector' product made for Stroh, an Austrian spirit producer, also picked up a WorldStar award. This hard-working pack offers a high level of protection for boxes and reduces both loading time and the company's carbon footprint.

Two Smurfit Kappa products topped the Transit Category. The 'Touch Box' significantly reduced the amount of packaging originally used by creating a pack comprised of parts that can be used separately or together depending on the product requirements. The streamlined new pack has reduced delivery times from 36 to 24 hours. The 'Skewed Insert' for car door seals includes two identical trays that have increased the capacity of the box by 25%.

The 'Easy-Rep' display, which was first used to promote Cadbury's Mini Eggs, came out top in the Point-of-Sale Category. Assembled in seconds, it captures attention in store alongside reducing both costs and materials.

Commenting about the win, Saverio Mayer, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Europe, said: "We are delighted and honoured to have been recognised in these prestigious awards.

"They are testament to the talent and creativity of our people who welcome even the most complex challenges and don't stop until they have identified the most sustainable solution."

The eight Smurfit Kappa winning products originate from Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the UK. The WorldStar awards ceremony will take place in Germany in May.
