Smurfit Kappa releases sustainability report

Smurfit Kappa has released a report that highlights the progress the group has made on its environmental and social responsibility promises.

The "Sustainability in Every Fibre" report shows that the group has come closer to creating a circular business model and is focusing on using 100 percent sustainably sourced fibers.

Among the notable achievements are:

Smurfit Kappa has reduced the amount of carbon emissions by 22.6 percent since 2005.

99.9 percent of the paper it sources is Chain of Custody certified under FSC, PEFCTM or SFI.

29 percent reduction in organic content of water returned to the environment from paper and board mills since 2005.

A 13.8 percent reduction in waste sent to landfill from paper and board mills since 2013

"We view sustainability as an important element of a responsible business culture, and we continue to prove how our way of working contributes to a better, more sustainable world and a brighter future," said CEO Tony Smurfit. "This approach has delivered consistent business growth and long-term partnerships with some of the world's most respected brands as well as with local customers across the 34 countries from which we operate."

The company also announced it is aiming to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill from its paper and board mills by 30 percent by 2020.
