Paper is MVP in Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon's dugout

CHICAGO, Illinois (From Domtar Corp.) -- While attempting to break a famously frustrating 109-year World Series drought, Joe Maddon, manager of the surging Chicago Cubs, still relies on paper instead of a computer to oversee his dugout strategy.

That's despite the recent deal between Apple and Major League Baseball, which is putting laptops in dugouts in 2016.

"If there's a moment that permits time to look up something, it might be OK," said Maddon in reference to the use of the new computers in a recent Chicago Sun Times article. "But I think that's where the piece of paper has it all over the computer. In that moment."

The Curse of the Billy Goat is one of the most famous legends in baseball. According to the legend, in 1945, Billy Sianis, owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, was directed to leave a World Series game at Wrigley Field because the smell of his pet goat was proving offensive to other fans. He then declared that the Cubs would never again win the World Series. True to the curse, the Cubs have not appeared in a World Series since.

Curse or no curse, the Cubs have been experiencing better times lately. It seems that the extensive research Maddon and his staff conduct before games and then condense into notes and charts may be part of the team's success.

"When you're trying to get something done quickly in the dugout, I want to believe that all that stuff should be in place prior to [the game]," Maddon told the Sun Times.

If and when the Cubs do break the Curse of the Billy Goat, there will be plenty of accolades to go around for the stars on the field. But paper just may be one of the unsung heroes in the team's rise to greatness.
