Metsä Board completes Euro 60 million upgrade at Simpele mill, raises fossil-free energy use to 98 percent

Metsä Board has finalized a Euro 60 million modernisation project at its Simpele folding boxboard mill, boosting fossil-free energy usage from 89% to 98% and launching a higher-performance version of its MetsäBoard Classic FBB product. The board machine is now fully operational and customer deliveries of the upgraded packaging board have begun.

The investment included a complete rebuild of the coating section, expansion of the coating colour kitchen, and installation of a new pallet packaging line. The project engaged over 430 professionals. The newly added curtain coating technology significantly improves visual consistency and print sharpness, targeting premium food and healthcare packaging applications.

Metsä Board states the upgrade supports its strategic goal of fossil-free production by 2030. CEO Esa Kaikkonen said the improvements help brand owners respond to stricter sustainability and safety standards while maintaining material efficiency and visual impact in packaging.
