H.S. "Doug" Dugal, co-founder and CEO of Integrated Paper Services, dies at 80

APPLETON, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- Dr. Hardev S. "Doug" Dugal is being remembered as a respected leader in the paper industry whose warmth and generosity of spirit extended to all those lucky enough to cross his path.

"Doug is the person that every person should aspire to be," said Maria Costello, executive director of Appleton's Paper Discovery Center.

He was kind and light-hearted, someone who gave his all to his work at the office and in the community, those who knew him said. His impact was felt deeply in the paper industry, the Fox Valley community and beyond.

Dugal passed away Wednesday after a four-year battle with multiple myeloma.

"He was a modest person, a very knowledgeable person," said Ruth Mansukhani, co-founder and board member of IndUS of Fox Valley, a group that works to strengthen ties between the Indian community and the larger, local American community. "What mostly impressed me about him was his ability to see the good in just about anybody."

He treated everyone well, whether a senator or a regular person on the street, she said.

When a celebration of his life takes place Friday at the Paper Discovery Center, 425 W. Water St., Costello expects at least 200 people will come to pay their respects. She wouldn't be surprised if that number reaches several hundred. The celebration runs from from 3 to 6 p.m.

"I'll still be waiting for him to stand in my office doorway and start telling a joke," she said, adding that she'll miss his "wonderful charm."

Dugal's career in the industry spanned more than 40 years and in 2014, he was inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame, which he co-founded. He served as a board member and secretary at the Hall of Fame for nearly 20 years.

At the dinner and induction ceremony in 2014, then-Hall of Fame Executive Director Kathleen Lhost said, "Half the people in the room are going to be there for him."

He was a local man whose impact was global, she said.

Dugal was one of three founders of Appleton's Integrated Paper Services and retired in 2002 as the company's CEO.

He was born in India, where he grew up and earned degrees in chemistry and chemical technology before leaving to pursue his Ph.D. in Germany, according to his obituary. He came to Appleton in 1964 as a postdoctoral fellow at what was once the Institute of Paper Chemistry and worked his way up to become one of its directors.

"He was a very, very intelligent man, and yet he never lorded it over anybody and was very down to earth," Costello said.

Dugal was also involved heavily in the community, including through his byline, which appeared regularly in Post-Crescent columns on the paper industry.

Mansukhani said Dugal was a co-founder of IndUS and board president for many years.

The organization grew out of the Fox Valley India Association, which she said caters to Indian families and which he founded when he came to Appleton. IndUS was an effort between Dugal and others to include the local community but also to improve relationships not just in the Fox Valley but in the country as a whole, she said. She thinks Dugal helped foster deeper understanding between people of different races and countries of origin here.

"He was always really interested in making sure that people understood each other and got along with each other, and he just had a very fundamental respect for all people," she said.
