Green Bay Packaging breaks ground on $500 million mill

GREEN BAY, Wis. (From news reports) - Green Bay Packaging has broken ground on a new paper mill in Green Bay.

On Wednesday, local and state officials gathered to celebrate construction of the first new paper mill to be built in Wisconsin in three decades.

The $500 million mill will replace the 71-year-old Green Bay Paper Mill. The company says the investment will keep 1,100 workers employed and create new jobs.

"We are proud to officially begin construction of our new, state-of-the-art paper mill in the city where our company was founded over 85 years ago," said Green Bay Packaging President and CEO Will Kress. "This new facility is the result of the continued hard work and success of our dedicated employees and loyal customers."

Miron Construction is the general contractor on the new mill. Green Bay Packaging says the project will create 1,000 construction jobs.

Voith will install a new paper machine.

The new mill is expected to open by spring 2021. The old mill will continue to operate during construction.
