Glatfelter to reduce global workforce by 3 percent to 5 percent

YORK, Pennsylvania (From the York Daily Record) -- Glatfelter said Thursday it plans to shrink its global workforce by 3 percent to 5 percent as weak economic growth in Europe, and political uncertainty in Russia and Ukraine, affects its business.

The reductions will affect Glatfelter's, York County operations, including its corporate locations and mill, William Yanavitch II, a Glatfelter senior vice president said in an email Thursday. The paper and fiber maker employs more than 850 people here.

Glatfelter hasn't yet determined how many positions will be eliminated locally. The company is assessing its staffing needs and the number of people who would be expected to leave naturally, including through retirement.

"We expect that natural attrition will account for some, but not all of the workforce reduction," Yanavitch said.

The company will "evaluate all opportunities to minimize the impact" on its workers, he said.
