Georgia-Pacific Green Bay paper mill celebrates 100 years

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (From news reports) -- It's safe to say a business lasting 100 years is an accomplishment.

Factor in the successful business is in Green Bay and a celebration is in order.

Georgia-Pacific held a 100th anniversary celebration at its Green Bay Broadway Mill Monday.

"A.E. Cofrin, if he could come back today, imagine how he would be amazed and impressed with that facility sitting over there," said Randy Harbath, former Georgia-Pacific employee.

Georgia-Pacific hasn't been the owner of the mill for 100 years.

In 1919, Austin E. Cofrin founded the mill which was then known as the Fort Howard Paper Company.

Paper production started in 1920 and continued to expand over the years.

In 1997, James River Corporation bought the mill. Three years later the company merged with Georgia-Pacific.

"Obviously, a lot of change has occurred over the course of the last century. In 1919, horses were used to clear the land that we're now standing on. Today, we run machines with horsepower that doesn't chew grass or hay," said Tim Ellsworth, Green Bay operations vice president of manufacturing.

Over the years, the company gained new ownership and changed names. A little over a decade ago Georgia-Pacific invested $50 million for a new paper recycling system at the mill.

Those investments along with dedicated workers are some of the reasons Georgia-Pacific's President and CEO says makes the mill successful.

"It's a fantastic employee culture that we've inherited and we're still, hopefully, contributing and growing. And, number two, I think the community. The values that they have here, the rule of law, the conditions," said Christian Fischer, company president and CEO.

Georgia-Pacific's 100th anniversary celebration ended with the opening of a 1994 time capsule.

"Well, look at this... looks like some of us retired people. Green Bay Packers, signed football," Ellsworth and Harbath said.

Some of the other items from the time capsule included napkins and paper towels from the '90s along with photos of people who worked for the company at the time.
