WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wisconsin (Wisconsin Rapids Tribune) -- A fire in a conveyor belt system at the Verso Paper mill did significant damage to the plant over the weekend, according to a fire department captain.

The fire occurred in a section of the mill known as the fiber and energy area, formerly known as the kraft mill, Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department Capt. Chuck Peeters said. The fire, which occurred at 3:32 p.m. Saturday, was in a conveyor system about 100 feet in the air, Peeters said. Four Wisconsin Rapids-area fire departments responded to the fire.

Early estimates are about $100,000 in damage, Peters said.
