LONGVIEW, Washington (From news reports)A contractor was hospitalized after falling 15 to 20 feet into a chamber beneath a heavy-duty machine at a Longview paper mill Wednesday night, June, 10, authorities said.

Crews from Longview Fire and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue responded to reports that a man had fallen into a pit underneath a paper machine at Smurfit Westrock's Longview Paper Mill and was "possibly submerged in product," officials said.

Arriving at the mill, crews found the man had "moderate" injuries after falling into the pit, placed him in a rescue basket, then lifted him to safety.

He was taken to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Authorities said no other workers at the site or firefighters were injured.
