Billerud launches recyclable cartonboards built for strength and moisture resistance

In response to rising demand for recyclable packaging that performs under pressure, Billerud introduces two new cartonboard grades: CrownBoard Carry and CrownBoard Light. Designed for strength and moisture resistance, the new packaging materials expand the CrownBoard portfolio and support brand owners in meeting both performance and sustainability goals.

Future-proof by design

Like all CrownBoard products, the new grades are made from fresh fibers and designed for easy recycling in existing streams. By avoiding wet-strength additives, they align with upcoming EU regulations that will require packaging to be fully recyclable by 2030.

"Brand owners and converters are looking for packaging materials that help them reduce carbon footprints, lower EPR fees and meet future recycling regulations. And this is where our new CrownBoard grades really shine" says Niki Jennische, Senior Director Product Management Cartonboard at Billerud.

CrownBoard Carry - engineered for strength

CrownBoard Carry is touted as Billerud's strongest cartonboard ever and delivers top-tier strength and tear resistance, which makes it ideal for robust and sturdy packaging, like beverage multipacks. Its high structural strength also supports lightweighting strategies that help reduce material and logistics costs.

CrownBoard Light - designed for moist environments

Billerud CrownBoard Light is a lightweight cartonboard with inherent wet-strength properties, which have been achieved without the use of wet-strength additives. CrownBoard Light is ideal for packaging solutions that need to keep their strength and appeal in cold and moist environments like coolers and freezers.

"With CrownBoard Carry and Light, we're removing more barriers to the transition toward packaging that is renewable, recyclable and resource-efficient," concludes Niki Jennische. "It gives brand owners more tailored options to meet performance demands - without compromising on sustainability."

With the addition of Carry and Light, the CrownBoard range now includes four distinct grades: Carry, Light, Craft, and Prestige - giving customers a broader selection of materials to meet their specific needs.
