The US interstate highway system is sixty-nine years old this coming June 29th. In many ways, this has been the most transformative change in the United States culture ever. Heck, I was even inspired to solo drive the 48 contiguous states in less than seven days, which I did in 2005. Small, local businesses and manufacturers were motivated to build larger factories to capitalize on the scale afforded by this highway system. We did so in the pulp and paper industry, at the cost or savings (depending on your point of view) of thousands of jobs.

Graphic Packaging Holding Company, a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, announced that its Board of Directors has approved a new $1.5 billion share repurchase authorization. This authorization is in addition to the July 27, 2023 share repurchase authorization under which $365 million remains available, bringing the aggregate available authorization as of April 30, 2025 to $1.865 billion.

Sonoco, a global packaging company, has posted a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net income of $54.4m for the first quarter (Q1) ending 30 March 2025, a 16.5% dip from the $65.2m recorded in Q1 2024.

Nauseef, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced today (May 1) that the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, one of the world's leading manufacturers of personal care and hygiene products, will establish an $800 million advanced manufacturing facility in Trumbull County, bringing an anticipated 491 new high-quality jobs.

Smurfit Westrock plc announced it will permanently close its coated recycled board (CRB) mill in St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S. and will discontinue production at its containerboard mill in Forney, Texas, U.S. The specialty coating facility at Forney will not be impacted. As a result, the Company's containerboard and CRB capacity is expected to reduce by over 500,000 tons.

Stora Enso has completed the acquisition of the Finnish sawmill company Junnikkala Oy, announced in October 2024. The acquired sawmills will be integrated with Stora Enso's packaging board site in Oulu, Finland, and secure a cost-efficient wood supply to the site, where a new packaging board machine recently started ramping up production.

Svante Technologies Inc. (Svante), a leader in carbon capture and removal technology, announced that its joint carbon capture and storage project with Mercer International Inc. (Mercer) has advanced to the Front-end Engineering and Design Phase 2 (FEL-2).
