Another fire at Norampac mill in Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, New York (From the Buffalo News) - For the second time in seven months, a massive fire broke out at the Norampac/Greenpac mill.

Firefighters were called to the Packard Road site Thursday afternoon, and though the blaze brought in crews from the city and the surrounding area, it was not as large as the one that happened in September. That one burned for nearly five days.

Cardboard bales in a storage yard outside the plant appeared to be what was burning. Unlike last time, no portions of the building appeared to catch fire.

Crews from across Niagara County, including Lewiston, Sanborn and Cambria, were among those joining city firefighters to battle the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 2:21 p.m., according to the Niagara County Fire Wire's Twitter feed. Shortly after 4 p.m., Mayor Paul A. Dyster reported that the fire was declared under control.

Just before 4 p.m., heavy construction equipment arrived at the scene. It was to be used to knock down the burning bales and help extinguish the flames.

At last year's much larger fire, that equipment wasn't brought in for several days, Dyster said.

Thursday's weather was not as windy as at the time of the September blaze and probably helped crews fight the fire. Rain began to fall at about 5 p.m., which also helped firefighters.

Some streets around the plant remained closed during rush hour, including Packard and 47th Street.
