Ahlstrom Kaukauna mill won't be cited for worker's death

KAUKAUNA, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- No safety citations will be issued in connection with a workplace death at a Kaukauna paper mill, OSHA said Monday, Feb. 13.

One worker was killed Aug. 16, 2022 at the Ahlstrom paper mill, also known as the Thilmany mill.

"Since no OSHA standard applied to the incident and specific criteria was not met to invoke Section 5(a)(1), the General Duty Clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, no citation was issued. OSHA did issue a Hazard Alert Letter for items that warranted notification," OSHA spokesman Scott Allen said.

According to the OSHA report, a 56-year-old boiler "suffered catastrophic failure in two pipes sections."

The report then outlines several safety suggestions for the company to review.
