Södra is taking the next step towards more circular flows in timber packaging. By switching to a new plastic solution, the share of recycled material increases from 50% to 70%, while strengthening the supply chains.

Södra is increasing the share of recycled material in its timber packaging by changing its plastic solution. The new plastic, which has an off-white/grey colour, makes it possible to use a higher proportion of recycled material. At the same time, the design is being updated with fewer print variations, meaning that packages will gradually take on a new appearance.

"By rethinking something as fundamental as packaging, we can reduce climate impact, increase the share of recycled material and take concrete steps towards more circular material flows," says Maria Persdotter Isaksson, Head of Sustainability at Södra Wood.

The initiative builds on an investment that has been under way for several years. As early as 2021, Södra introduced timber wrap made from recycled consumer plastic in collaboration with Swedish Trioworld. With the transition to 70% recycled material, Södra is taking a further clear step in developing more circular packaging solutions. The change is also expected to reduce emissions from the packaging by around 160 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents per year.

"Södra is a partner that drives development forward and sets high standards for both performance and climate impact. The fact that we are now able to further increase the share of recycled material in timber packaging together shows what is possible when long-term collaboration and high ambitions go hand in hand," says Johan Lantz, Sales Director at Trioworld.

The new timber packaging has been tested at the sawmill in Värö and will gradually be introduced at all sawmills as part of Södra's continued transition.
