SEYMOUR, Indiana (From news reports) -- R.R. Donnelley has announced that it will close its Seymour location this spring, resulting in the layoff of 96 workers. The Chicago-based company plans to close its location at Freeman Field Industrial Park in May, according to a notice filed last week with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. While the notice does not specify the reasons for the closure, it states that the company expects the closure to be permanent. The company's corporate office did not respond to requests for comment. Voicemails left with the Seymour office were not returned. Founded in 1864, R.R. Donnelley provides marketing and business communications, commercial printing and other services and describes the Seymour location as a direct mail facility offering direct marketing solutions, among other things, according to its website. In 2019, the Seymour City Council voted 5-0 to approve a $3.4 million tax abatement for R.R. Donnelley to hire 20 temporary workers and retain its 123 employees. A company official told the council that R.R. Donnelley had recently received a $114 million federal contract to help produce materials related to the 2020 U.S. Census, including questionnaires, letters, inserts, postcards and envelopes. The materials were expected to be produced at the Chicago-based company's locations across the country. A company official told the council that it was vital for the company to purchase the equipment to complete the project, and that the abatement would help the company secure future contracts, which could lead to growth in business and jobs. R.R. Donnelley set up shop in Seymour in 1992 after acquiring American Inline Graphics Inc., which had been operating at Freeman Field Industrial Park since the 1980s.
