Quad/Graphics to close two more plants, affecting 250 employees

SUSSEX, Wisconsin (From the Milwaukee Business Journal) -- Quad/Graphics Inc. has decided to close two more printing plants this month.

The Sussex-based printing company announced it will close the Atglen, Pa., and Lenexa, Kan., plants by Feb. 27, impacting a total of 240 employees. That news comes on the heels of the company closing four plants in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The closings reflect the excess capacity Quad/Graphics has in its retail insert platform in other plants across the country. Past plant closures have brought hundreds of new jobs to Wisconsin, where Quad/Graphics has some of its most efficient plants, but the work from the two latest closures will move to other plants outside of Wisconsin, said spokeswoman Claire Ho.

"It makes sense to eliminate excess capacity in our platform by consolidating work into plants where we believe we can achieve the greatest manufacturing and distribution efficiencies," Ho said. "Our goal is to create the strongest, most competitive retail platform to continue serving our clients well into the future."

The 445,000-square-foot Atglen plant employs about 150, and the 95,000-square-foot Lenexa plant employs about 90.

Quad/Graphics will offer affected employees opportunities to relocate to other plants.
