Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia (News release) - Port Hawkesbury Paper (PHP) announces the release of its 2025 Sustainability Report, which details a year of meaningful progress across safety, clean energy, environmental accountability, and community investment. The report highlights PHP's activities and accomplishments through 2025, underscoring the company's continued dedication to safety, sustainability, and long-term value for its customers, partners, employees, and the broader Nova Scotia community.

Key highlights from the report include:

Making Significant Progress Toward Clean, Renewable Energy: Construction began in 2025 on the Goose Harbour Lake Wind Farm, one of Nova Scotia's most ambitious clean energy projects, and remains on schedule to come online by the end of 2026. Once operational, the wind farm will supply at least 60% of PHP's annual electrical use and is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 350,000 tonnes per year--equivalent to 2.4% of Nova Scotia's 2022 total emissions. The project includes a 10% equity stake collectively held by 13 Mi'kmaw First Nations through the Wskijnu'k Mtmo'taqnuow Agency (WMA), supported by the Canada Infrastructure Bank's Indigenous equity loan program.
Strengthened Environmental Reporting: PHP aligned its greenhouse gas emissions tracking with the internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ensuring its environmental data is accurate, transparent, and globally comparable.
Forestry Stewardship: PHP completed its annual forestry audit with zero non-conformance issues, marking its 17th year of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC-C112699) certification and 11th year of Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) certification. The audit found the company exceeded its protected areas requirement, with 18% of conservation lands versus the required 10%.
Innovation and Market Expansion: The launch of Elevation Book, a premium book-grade paper for the publication and educational workbook market, reflects PHP's continued focus on innovation, reinforcing its reputation for premium, sustainable products as it expands into new markets.
Investing in Community: PHP continued its second year of a four-year, $100,000 pledge to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital's Cancer Care Centre. In addition to ongoing fundraising and support of the IWK Children's Hospital, PHP continues to invest in education, youth programs, and local community organizations.
Safety Leadership: Ongoing safety improvement continues to be a primary focus, and the company has implemented a layered auditing process to strengthen engagement and accountability across all levels of operations.
