ALABAMA (From news reports) -- The Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) paper mill in Jackson has called employees back to work and is expected to resume production Monday, Jan. 9.
The mill has not made a public statement on restarting.
PCA shocked employees and the community in mid-November when it announced that it was temporarily laying off nearly all of its 400- plus workers and idling the mill.
PCA did not elaborate at the time but did issue a brief statement that the shutdown was due to "economic conditions and lower demand for our products...We fully intend to resume operations after the holidays."
PCA recently converted the Jackson mill from the exclusive manufacture of white paper to also make linerboard, or brown paper, used to make cardboard boxes.
Apparently, there was a large inventory of linerboard and boxes on the market resulting in sluggish or no sales of the products which resulted in PCA's actions to let inventories catch up with demand.
