SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (News release) -- The Una Fire Department said a business fire has been contained following an issued with a baler machine on Thursday morning, June 4.

As of 2:30 p.m., officials said the fire at Sonoco Products Company on Caldwell Road has been contained but it will smolder for several days. Nearby resident will see and smell smoke in the area.

Crews initially reported that several units were called to the fire around 4:44 a.m. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Chief Jeff Hadden said the building is about the size of a football field and packed with mostly cardboard. The roof of the building collapsed but no injuries were reported.

The company released the following statement at 1:16 p.m.:

"A significant fire occurred early this morning, June 4, 2026, at the Sonoco Spartanburg County Recycling Facility on Caldwell Road. There are no reported injuries to employees, first responders or members of the public. The facility was closed at the time of the fire.

Fire authorities are still actively working the scene, but we know the impact to the structure is substantial. The initial assumption is that the fire may have started in an electrical control box.

Sonoco purchased the facility in 1994, and it employs 19 teammates. The facility daily processed recycled fiber (boxes) for use as a raw material to make more recycled paperboard. We are working with our customers to divert materials to our Columbia and Hartsville, SC, and Charlotte, Gastonia, NC processing facilities.

Our top priority is the safety of our employees, our neighbors, and the surrounding community. We are cooperating fully with officials as they work to contain and extinguish the fire and to determine the exact cause of the fire."
