CROSSETT, Arkansas (From the Ashley County Ledger) -- It was reported this week that two local fire departments and Georgia-Pacific's Fire Brigade responded to a fire at the plywood mill at Georgia-Pacific on Friday, 30 Oct. 2015.

Crossett Fire Chief Bo Higginbotham said the call came at 9:24 a.m. involving a fire in the stud mill. The blaze was in an officer break room on the second floor, according to Higginbotham. However, when fire fighters attempted to make entry, it was realized the blaze was worse than initially suspected.

At that point, the chief said fire fighters were evacuated and a call for mutual aid went out to North Crossett Fire Department and Georgia-Pacific's Fire Brigade.

Deron Boykin, on duty captain with the Crossett Fire Department, served as incident commander. It was decided to battle the blaze by attacking from three different sides, said Higginbotham. The fire chief said the fire fighters stayed on scene until 12:30 p.m.

"All three (departments) worked very well together, everything went according to plan," said Higginbotham, adding that if not for the department's teamwork the fire and damage could have been a lot worse.

Asked about the cause of the fire, Higginbotham said, "(it is his understanding that) The area of the blaze was supposed to be closed off, but there was electricity running to the area."

The fire chief said the cause and location where the fire initiated is under investigation by Georgia-Pacific.
