Scott Gearen, Chemical Security Inspector at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is bringing presentation Protecting Pulp and Paper Production Facilities with Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) to the Specialty Papers US 2019 program!

As a key US conference focused on developing ideas and capitalizing on relationships in the specialty papers market, Specialty Papers US 2019, coming to Milwaukee, WI, Sep. 30 - Oct. 2, 2019, will bring industry experts to the forefront, creating beneficial opportunities for networking and discussion.

The 2019 program features expert speakers from Cascades-Sonoco, Metsä Board, Novolex, Evonik Corporation, Sustana, Waste Management, Michelman, Solenis, Fisher International, Kotkamills Oy, and many more.

Gearen's presentation will discuss the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program and how the standards it sets in place apply to pulp and paper facilities. CFATS identifies and regulates high-risk chemical facilities to ensure they have security measures in place to reduce the risk of a terrorist attack. Pulp, paper, and paper conversion facilities use a wide variety of chemicals, many of which are regulated by CFATS for various security issues. If held in specified quantities and concentrations, these chemicals trigger reporting requirements under CFATS.

Ahead of his presentation at Specialty Papers 2019, Jeff Stacy, Market Segment Manager at Cascades-Sonoco, recently discussed emerging opportunities in the specialty papers industry with producer Rebecca List.

According to Stacy, "The specialty papers industry is in a unique position, one that we have not been in for some time. Paper is viewed in a more favorable light right now over plastics. This is not to say that there is no longer a place for plastic in packaging, because there definitely is. But what we are seeing right now is a willingness and openness to look again at paper packaging as an alternative solution. Paper is renewable and highly functional, and with the strong desire for recyclability, specialty papers are a very good option. New technologies and new coatings are constantly being developed, and we see a very bright future for specialty papers, as long as companies have an open mind and are willing to change. . . From the C-Suite to the shop floor, everyone needs to be on board and understand what's in it for them if they do make the change to a new, more sustainable, package."

At Specialty Papers 2019, Stacy and Yvon Mongrain, Technical Director at Cascades-Sonoco, are discussing the commercial deployment of a water-based functional coating solution providing new applications in eco-friendly packaging, including recyclable, repulpable, and compostable containers. This technology is the result of listening to customers, listening to consumers, listening to the marketplace, and then working to create something that solves a problem and fills a need.
