Veritiv opens Fairfield, Ohio operations center

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (From The Enquirer) -- After opening its new operations center in Fairfield, Veritiv Corp. is looking forward to expanding its workforce in the region.

Officials from Veritiv and the city of Fairfield hosted a ribbon cutting event at the company's Greater Cincinnati Operations Center.

Veritiv occupies about 72,000 square feet of space at the Gilmore Pointe office park for its customer service, credit, information technology and finance workers. At the 6120 S. Gilmore Road space, Veritiv is a neighbor and tenant of Fairfield-based insurer Cincinnati Financial Corp.

Including temporary employees, there are about 500 Veritiv workers in Fairfield, company spokesman Kevin Feeney said. But on Monday, company officials said they expect that number to rise over time.

"This new operations center is an important strategic investment for Veritiv, and it aligns with our goal to integrate our operations and strengthen collaboration throughout the company," said Mary Laschinger, Veritiv board chairman and chief executive. "The Greater Cincinnati area and the city of Fairfield are ideal markets for exceptional talent to support our company's operations and our customers. We look forward to contributing to the local economy and community."

Veritiv moved its executive offices to Sandy Springs, Georgia, located outside of Atlanta, after a merger between International Paper's xpedx division and Unisource Worldwide Inc. At the time, the merger created a nearly $9 billion publicly traded company. Veritiv generated about $8.7 billion in revenue in 2015 and ranked No. 323 on the Fortune 500 list of largest U.S. public companies. The company distributes print, publishing, packaging and facility products and operates 180 distribution centers throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

But the Fairfield facility's opening reflects a promise kept to workers and officials from Greater Cincinnati economic development groups two years ago.

Business leaders went into "fight mode" after the merger announcement and seeing published reports that the company could leave Greater Cincinnati, said Johnna Reeder, president and chief executive of regional economic development group Redi Cincinnati, told The Enquirer in 2014.

Losing that many jobs and one of Clermont County's largest employers would have been a big blow to the region. Veritiv has closed its former site in Miami Township.

The developments spurred REDI Cincinnati, JobsOhio and others to organize a series of meetings over several months locally and in the Atlanta area with Veritiv officials. Company officials said the new site allowed Veritiv employees to remain with the company, but also provide easy access to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and an opportunity to grow in its space. Veritiv also worked with the city of Fairfield, Fairfield Chamber of Commerce to secure its new location.

Fairfield Mayor Steve Miller said he was happy to welcome Veritiv to the city and the company now ranks among the city's 10 largest employers.

Veritiv employs more than 600 people in Ohio and also employs workers at a distribution center in Northern Kentucky. Overall, the company employs about 8,800 people.
