Football and Elections

Football
My wife and I had the opportunity to hear Coach Bill Clark speak at the Autauga Education Foundation A+ Banquet. Coach Clark may not be well known outside of Alabama, but I predict that by 2020 he'll be a household name in the US, much as Nick Saban is today.

Coach Clark led the Prattville High School football team to three state championships and has had success everywhere he's been since then. Currently he is at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), famous for its medical center. UAB terminated its football program one year after Coach Clark got there; then restarted it seven months later. He is in a rebuilding program and I'd guess there isn't any coach in the country more qualified to execute a rebuild that Coach Clark.

Look for UAB to begin playing again in the fall of 2017. If they can get a service academy or U. of South Alabama on their schedule at home, we're going to the game!

If you have a business and want a motivational speaker who doesn't cost an arm and a leg, give Coach Clark a call!

At our school, Autauga Academy, we just hired a prominent local football figure, Coach Bobby Carr. He'll be our offensive coordinator but comes from a head coaching position at another private school. The publicity whirlwind surrounding his leaving the other school and his search for another position was front page every other day. Being a part of settling it all was a very rewarding experience. It was really a win-win, as both the school and the Carrs are benefiting from this new relationship. Bobby Carr is a huge talent so keep his name in the back of your mind. In five or ten years he may be another Nick Saban.

Elections
England has voted to exit the EU. Our fearless Paperitalo Publications leader Jim Thompson wrote his thoughts on the impact we may feel in the presidential election this November. I hope his predictions come true. But thinking about Donald Trump, I realized that he doesn't have a home constituency, since he's never been in politics. I wonder if there have been others, perhaps Dwight Eisenhower. Ike was a war hero and I guess you could say Donald is a business hero who also appeals to the blue collar worker. Will it work? We'll find out in November.

Gene Canavan is a retired West Point Graduate and Paper Mill Utilities Manager and lives in Prattville, Alabama, USA.
